The Otter Room’s Weekly College Football Picks

We have scratched and clawed back to get above .500. After a 9-5 week, we are currently 53-49-3 on the season.

Oregon State vs. #20 Stanford (-21)

Oregon State is over their brief interim coach uptick. The Beavers don’t have much of a defense and although Bryce Love is questionable, the Cardinal have more than enough weapons to beat down Oregon State in Corvallis.

Boston College (+3.5) vs. Florida State

Boston College’s offensive resurgence over the past two weeks has come out of nowhere. Florida State provides a step up in competition, but the ‘Noles have struggled on offense and with a quiet atmosphere in store in Chestnut Hill, you have to wonder what FSU’s motivation factor will be with the ACC out of reach.

Baylor (+8) vs. Texas

Texas is improved, but has lost tight games to elite competition this season. Despite being winless, Baylor is improving and has put a scare in West Virginia and Oklahoma in Waco.

#5 Wisconsin (-27) vs. Illinois

The Wisconsin cupcake tour goes on as the Badgers travel to Illinois Saturday. The Illini are the worst team in the Big Ten and Wisconsin has yet to be seriously threatened this season. Illinois will have no answers as UW bludgeons the Illini with their running game.

#9 Notre Dame vs. #14 N.C. State – O/U 58 – UNDER

The Irish and Wolfpack bolster top-25 defenses and with the cold weather expected in South Bend, the under is a lock.

North Carolina vs. #8 Miami (-20.5)

Miami has escaped with close wins each of the last three weeks, but the Hurricanes won’t have to sweat this trip to Chapel Hill. Although the Miami offense is hardly explosive, UNC has been ravaged by injuries on the defensive side and their offense is directionless. UNC’s last four losses have been by an average of 27 points and were dominated for 60 minutes at the hands of Virginia Tech last Saturday as the Hokies beat the Tar Heels 59-7.

Florida (+14.5) vs. Georgia – O/U: 43.5 – UNDER

Florida has won three straight at The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” and the Gators are always a thorn in UGA’s side when the Bulldogs are highly ranked. What Florida lacks offensively, they more than make up for with elite athletes on defense. The Gators will provide the toughest defense Jake Fromm has faced to date.

#12 Washington vs. UCLA (+17)

Josh Rosen has to have a signature game at some point, right? The Bruins are coming off a win vs. Oregon and while the Huskies represent the toughest team and venue UCLA has faced this season, expect the Bruins to stick with Washington in a four quarter shootout in Seattle.

#6 Ohio State (-6.5) vs. #2 Penn State – O/U: 57.5 – UNDER

Ohio State has revenge on their mind and Urban Meyer has never lost a game coming off a bye (20-0). Penn State will finally play a formidable front seven and the Buckeyes will stuff Saquon Barkley and the PSU running game. The Penn State defense should be able to give J.T. Barrett trouble, but Ohio State will pull away in the second half in a low scoring affair.

#17 USF (-10.5) vs. Houston

Although the Cougars are a step below where they’ve been the past few years, Major Applewhite has done a solid job in his first year as head coach. The Bulls received their wake up call last week with a relatively tight game at Tulane. Expect Quinton Flowers and the entire USF offense to be clicking on all cylinders at home.

UConn vs. Missouri (-12)

Like their opening win vs. Missouri State and last week’s demolition of Idaho, Missouri has proven they can put up points vs. inferior competition. The Tigers have to travel to sleepy Hartford, but the Huskies have one of the worst pass defenses in the country.

#7 Clemson vs. Georgia Tech (+14)

Clemson has had a bye week to lick their wounds following the Syracuse upset, but there’s never enough time to prepare foe the triple option. The Yellow Jackets are two plays away from being undefeated and TaQuon Marshall may be the best triple option QB Paul Johnson has had in Atlanta. Clemson has enough talent of the defensive line to eventually stop the Jackets, but this game will be close in the fourth quarter.
