Live From the AmFam: Lunchtime Report

After building his lead to as many as three, Paul Broadhurst is now tied for the lead with Fred Couples as they begin to wrap up their front nine.

Broadhurst got to -14, but bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6 dropped him into a tie for the lead.

Couples has three birdies on the front and has another good birdie opportunity as he tees off on the par-5 ninth.

Temperatures are cool and winds are strong at University Ridge. One would think those conditions would not do Couples’ notoriously iffy back any favors, but he hasn’t shown any of it bothering him through the first nine.

Scott Verplank and Joe Durant currently reside at -11, one shot off the pace, while Lee Janzen is two back at -10.

Durant had the low front nine of the leaders with a four-under 32.

Madison-native Steve Stricker has had an up-and-down front as he tallied two birdies sandwiched around two bogeys. Stricker is currently -9 and playing the par-5 ninth.

In the morning report, we mentioned that Mark Calcavecchia had one of the early rounds to keep an eye on after he birdied the first two holes. Well, he didn’t exactly keep up the pace.

After that two-under start, Calc proceeded to play the next 10 holes at seven-over par including a triple bogey seven at the par-4 tenth.

Low round of the early wave goes to Tommy Armour III who posted a six-under 66.  Armour III fired a 31 on the back which included an eagle three on the par-5 16th.
