Week 1 of Bowl Picks

That song can only mean one thing…….it’s Bowl Week.

I love bowl season. People bitch and moan about there being too many bowl games, but some football is better than no football. If you roll your eyes about watching the New Orleans Bowl, just think of yourself in May when you’d give your left arm to watch some college football.

The only bad thing about bowl games is the tendency of pundits to use this as a litmus test to gauge how good conferences are. It’s hard to garner any widespread conclusions from bowl games because so much of the result is predicated on a team’s enthusiasm on being there.

Las Vegas Bowl: San Diego State (+4) vs. Houston

This is one of the best bowl games that is going under the radar. With the upheaval on the Houston coaching staff and the potent Aztec offense, SDSU will cruise the cover and win. With a good game, Donnell Pumphrey can break the all-time yards record.

AutoNation Cure Bowl: Arkansas State (+6) vs. Central Florida

Arkansas State has won seven of eight games to close the season and a win over a prominent AAC school would be a nice feather in the cap for the Fun Belt.

Poinsettia Bowl: Wyoming (+9) vs. BYU

Notice a trend? When in doubt, go with a sizeable underdog in bowl games. A team will take any additional motivation in a game that might lack zest. Craig Bohl has done a phenomenal job in his third year with the Cowboys. BYU will win, but Wyo will cover.

Idaho Potato Bowl: Idaho (+13.5) vs. Colorado State

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, you throw the records out when it comes to the Idaho Potato Bowl. That sentiment is especially true when the Vandals are making a rare bowl appearance. In what will be an essential home game, the Vandals will cover.

Armed Forces Bowl: Louisiana Tech (-6) vs. Navy

Navy has been decimated by injuries in the last three games of their season. The Bulldogs potent offense will be too much for the Midshipmen to contend with.

The picks for the remaining bowl games will be posted at the end of next week.
